    <title>EVENT: COMMUNITY HEARTBEAT TRUST DEFIBRILLATOR SEMINAR</title>
    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/2400/EVENT-COMMUNITY-HEARTBEAT-TRUST-DEFIBRILLATOR-SEMINAR</link>
    <description>As many of you may already have seen, we now have a defibrillator installed on the outside of the Village Hall.&amp;nbsp; Hopefully by the time you read this it will be fully operational.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; It is very simple to use, and talks you through all the things you have to do to use it.&amp;nbsp; HOWEVER IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU ALWAYS PHONE 999 BEFORE FETCHING IT.&amp;nbsp; This will ensure that an ambulance is on its way as soon as possible,&amp;nbsp; the ambulance service will also give you the access code for the box it is kept in.&amp;nbsp; In addition they will tell you other things you should do to help the patient survive.

As part of the package we have purchased from the Community Heartbeat Trust we have the opportunity to hold an awareness session.&amp;nbsp; We have taken advantage of this and it will be held at 10.00 am on March 10th in the Village Hall (It takes 2 hours). They will be demonstrating the use of defibrillators and explaining how the equipment works and the benefits to the community in saving precious minutes in the treatment of sudden cardiac arrest.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;There will also be some basic first aid training eg how to perform CPR and how to put a patient in the rescue position.&amp;nbsp; Everyone is welcome to come along; there is no need to book.

Broad Town WI decided last year they would like to raise money to install a defibrillator in the village in memory of Rosie McLaren who had recently passed away.&amp;nbsp; She had always been very involved in village life, helping anyone who was sick, bereaved or lonely.&amp;nbsp; She was also a very supportive member of the Church and WI among other things.&amp;nbsp; We thought it would be a fitting tribute.

Finally we would like to thank Broad Town Parish Council, and the Area Board for their help and support when we were raising funds.&amp;nbsp; A special thank you to the Parish Council for also agreeing to take on the on going costs.

We hope you can join us.
Broad Town WI

    <description>This month Purton Peartree Pealers treated us to a demonstration of hand bell ringing with a short talk on the background of ringing. The sound produced was lovely and it was interesting to learn about the basics of producing a lovely sound. We enjoyed having a go and with intense concentration and much help we managed to produce a recognisable tune.

    <description>This month we enjoyed a talk by speaker Margaret Hiscock from Wiltshire Scrap Store who explained that the charity has volunteers who collect scrap eg fabric, plastic and leather&amp;nbsp; from companies which would otherwise go to landfill sites. Groups from schools, play groups to museums come to the Store in Lacock and purchase bags of scrap for use in various craft and art projects. The public can also donate fabric, buttons, knitting yarn and buy bags of scraps or kits from the store. Volunteers are always welcome and some doing work experience go on to full time work. Advisors are available to help such as with a Chippenham project to make a Chinese dragon. After this interesting talk Margaret produced kits of scraps produced by volunteers at the Store and encouraged everyone to try one. Eventually all were completed.

This month (October 18th) we will be in the Village Hall for a Hand Bell Ringing demonstration with Libbie Sheppard of the Purton Peartree Pealers.&amp;nbsp; We should all get the chance to have a go and try out our skills.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/1365/July-Meeting-2017</link>
    <description>For our meeting in July we enjoyed a demonstration of Indian cooking by Savita Ladva who is a friend of one of our members. Savita was both educational and fun and showed us how to make both meat and vegetable curries from scratch using an array of spices from cinnamon to paprika with some garlic and ginger thrown in for good measure. We had a tasting session of chicken curry, chickpea curry and potato curry with rice and had a go at rolling fresh chapattis. The Village Hall has never smelt so good. We are hoping to be able to put some of her recipes on our website in the near future so look out for that. &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;

This month (August 16th) we will be out and about again with a walk around one of the lakes in Ashton Keynes follow by a pub meal.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/1355/May-Meeting-2017</link>
    <description>Our speaker in May was Alistair Garrard. Alistair is a former RAF Dog Handler and Trainer. He told us how after he joined the RAF he spent some time as an &amp;lsquo;intruder&amp;rsquo; complete with padded jacket &amp;ndash; getting regularly attacked by guard dogs in training! He had a very interesting career which took him to Cyprus, (where his RAF base was attacked by gunmen), Baghdad, Afghanistan, St Kitts, Malaysia and Kenya &amp;ndash; some of that time spent with private security companies. While in the RAF he was in the Dog Demonstration Team and also trained dogs and handlers for Firearms &amp;amp; Explosives detection and Drug detection for Customs searches. He was joined by his Golden Retriever Dexter who was charming and very popular with the audience.

This month (June 21st) we will be visiting a National Garden Scheme garden in Allington.

We are a friendly group and are always happy to welcome new members. If you are unsure if the WI is right for you why not give it a go. Our meetings are generally held in the Village Hall on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30. If you would like to come along please call Annette on 01793 739021. We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

    <description>Our speaker in April was Fred the Forager, aka Fred Gillan, who teaches people how to forage for wild plants, he also runs a herbal dispensary. Fred told us how his interest in wild flora was escalated following an unpleasant experience as a boy with a poisonous mushroom and how there are over 12,300 species of mushroom of which Fred still eats a number of safe ones regularly. He told us how to make a delicious wild garlic and nettle soup and explained how to forage by the seashore - giving members the opportunity to try pickled &amp;lsquo;Chicken of the woods&amp;rsquo; a type of fungus and Rosehip Brandy. Fred&amp;rsquo;s website is www.thewildsideoflife.co.uk.

This month (May 17th) our speaker will be Alastair Garrard who will be presenting his dog Dexter and discussing Dog Behaviour and Training.

    <description>Our speaker in March was Sue Dunmore from Swindon Volunteering. &amp;nbsp;She gave an informative talk explaining the history of volunteering, which started much longer ago than you would expect. &amp;nbsp;People have been helping the poor and needy for many hundreds of years. &amp;nbsp;She also explained that her organisation helps match willing helpers with the most appropriate area of need for their skills and interests. They have a website do-it.org if you are interested. Our normal meeting was followed by the AGM where a new committee was elected to take us through to next year. &amp;nbsp; Thank you to those who put themselves forward, we wish them well.

Next month (April 19th) we will be entertained by Fred the Forager. &amp;nbsp;He will tell us about how to collect food from the wild! &amp;nbsp;Sounds intriguing!

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/1348/Musical-Extravaganza</link>
    <description>BTWI swapped Wiltshire for London&amp;#39;s theatre land and visited the West End premiere of The Girls. The musical is based on the 2003 Calendar Girls film. Penned by Gary Barlow and featuring lyrics and a book by the film&amp;rsquo;s original screenwriter Tim Firth.

The Girls is based on a real life story about a Women&amp;rsquo;s Institute group who fundraise for a local hospital by posing for a nude calendar. The group become a media sensation and their heart-warming story follows the close friendships in the group, as well as the strained personal lives.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/1331/November-Meeting-2016</link>
    <description>This month our speaker was Siobhan Neill a cognitive therapy&amp;nbsp;counsellor. &amp;nbsp;She&amp;nbsp;showed&amp;nbsp;us breathing techniques to help&amp;nbsp;calm and de-stress us. &amp;nbsp;She also described ways to make ourselves feel more confident by using different postures and mindfulness.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;In her practice she also uses hypnotherapy to cure phobias but unfortunately she wasn&amp;rsquo;t able to show us this. &amp;nbsp;It was a very interesting talk and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Also this month we held a Quiz evening in the Village Hall. &amp;nbsp;It was a challenging quiz brilliantly set by Jeff Hartley. &amp;nbsp;He was ably helped by his wife Beth and son Jonathan. &amp;nbsp;Everyone enjoyed themselves, and the ploughman&amp;#39;s supper seemed to go down well. Thanks must go to all WI members who helped set up the Hall and prepare the food. &amp;nbsp;Also a big thank you to the bar staff Trevor, Matt and Brian who helped with the setting up and clearing away too. &amp;nbsp;A profit of &amp;pound;112 was made which will enable us to pay for a couple of speakers next year.

We are a friendly group and welcome new members.&amp;nbsp; Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall.&amp;nbsp; If you are interested in visiting us please contact Kate on&amp;nbsp;01793 731536.&amp;nbsp; We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/1326/October-Meeting-2016</link>
    <description>This month&amp;nbsp;Miranda Marsh came to talk to us about a visit to Mongolia where she worked as a volunteer for the Christina Noble Children&amp;#39;s Foundation for 2 months. &amp;nbsp;While she was there she lived in a Mongolian yurt (a ger) in an orphanage on the out skirts of Ulan Bator. &amp;nbsp;The children in the orphanage often arrive very traumatised by abuse, neglect and abandonment. There is a serious drink problem in Mongolia which is often at the root of their problems. &amp;nbsp;Her role was to help the adults in the orphanage shake off the austere regime left behind by the Russians and learn to play and interact lovingly with the children to give them a sense of belonging and security. &amp;nbsp;Even in the few weeks she was there she was rewarded by seeing the children become happier and more relaxed. &amp;nbsp;She hopes to return next year to see how things have progressed. &amp;nbsp;It was an inspiring and moving talk.

Unfortunately our speaker for next month has just dropped out so we are having to find a replacement. &amp;nbsp;So at this stage we cannot tell you who that will be.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/312/July-Meeting-2016</link>
    <description>Our speakers this month were Graham Barnes and Jenny Oakshot from the Marlborough branch of the University of the Third Age. &amp;nbsp;They showed a very interesting film in which members talked about the enjoyment they got from learning new things by joining the various groups available in their areas. &amp;nbsp;In the groups the members share knowledge and help each other learn, one member usually taking the lead. &amp;nbsp;Topics vary from languages, and walking to things like DIY and quilt making. Then Graham and Jenny talked about their own experiences and how they have made many friends, had wonderful outings and holidays and learnt lots of new things.&amp;nbsp;

Next month (August 17th) we are going for a walk in Coate Water Park followed by a meal in the Sun Inn.&amp;nbsp;

We are a friendly group and welcome new members. &amp;nbsp;Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall. &amp;nbsp;If you are interested in visiting us please contact Kate on&amp;nbsp;01793 731536. &amp;nbsp;We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/309/HRH-90th-Birthday-Celebrations</link>
    <description>Many village events took place over the weekend of 10th -12th June 2016 in celebration of the 90th Birthday of HRH.

On Saturday 11th June, between 3pm - 5pm a Royal tea party was held in the village hall hosted by Broad Town WI. &amp;nbsp; The&amp;nbsp;event was a huge success with 90 people enjoying an afternoon tea and Royal themed quiz with the backdrop of historical footage of Her Majesty playing on a big screen. &amp;nbsp;A big thank you to all who came and all who helped with setting up, serving and clearing away. A great weekend, thanks to the organising committee for all their hard work.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/310/June-Meeting-2016</link>
    <description>This month we visited TWIGS community garden in Cheney Manor for a guided tour of their lovely gardens. &amp;nbsp;It was very interesting and enjoyable.&amp;nbsp; Working in the gardens and the craft studio attached, is very therapeutic and helps people with mental health issues.&amp;nbsp; There is also a caf&#233; where people can work when they are feeling better, as a step towards going back to work.&amp;nbsp; Members enjoyed the tour of the beautiful peaceful gardens and were able to purchase some of the lovely plants grown there. The gardens are open to the public on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; if anyone would like to visit.

In July (20th) we will be having a talk, in the Village Hall, by the University of the Third Age in Marlborough.&amp;nbsp; They will tell us about the life enhancing opportunities for the retired and semi-retired offered by the organisation.&amp;nbsp;

We are a friendly group and welcome new members. &amp;nbsp;Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall. &amp;nbsp;If you are interested in visiting us please contact Kate on 01793 731536. &amp;nbsp;We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/304/May-Meeting-2016</link>
    <description>This month we were out and about again visiting Woodhill Park Farm in Bushton to see their robotic milking parlour.&amp;nbsp; Our kind hosts Peter and Anita Gantlett showed us how the&amp;nbsp; cows take charge of their own milking, coming in from pasture when they feel they need milking and queuing patiently (mostly) to go into one of the two milking stalls.&amp;nbsp; The robot cleans the teats, then attaches the suction cups by using laser guides. It also weighs the cow and then administers the required amount of grain feed.&amp;nbsp; The cups are removed automatically when all milk has been taken.&amp;nbsp; It was fascinating and apparently leads to happier cows and so higher milk yields.

Next month on the 15th June we will be visiting the TWIGs community garden in Cheyney Manor Swindon.&amp;nbsp; This is a special garden that is used to help people with mental health issues.

We are a friendly group with members from all over the area and generally meet on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall. If you would like more information please contact Kate on 01793 731536.&amp;nbsp; We are also on the Broad Town Village website and Facebook.

    <description>This month members went to Westlecott Bowls Club in Old Town.&amp;nbsp; We were given a talk about the Club and then shown how to bowl on their amazing indoor green.&amp;nbsp; They also have an outdoor green with fantastic views, but it was a bit cold for that!&amp;nbsp; We were then allowed to have a go ourselves.&amp;nbsp; Allowing for the bias on the bowl was a little tricky to start with but everyone improved by the end.&amp;nbsp; We were also treated to tea and biscuits.

Next month we are also out on a visit to a robotic milk parlour in Bushton.

    <description>Our March Meeting was our AGM.&amp;nbsp; A new committee was elected with just one change;&amp;nbsp;Dawn Flynn took over from Michelle Sanders as part secretary.&amp;nbsp; Many thanks to Michelle for a wonderful job over the last few years.

Following the AGM members talked about volunteering, and what a rewarding experience it can be.&amp;nbsp; Many of our members do volunteering of one sort or another.&amp;nbsp; Examples were: guiding visitors around Westonbirt Arboretum,&amp;nbsp;being an Independent Visitor for a foster child,&amp;nbsp;being a &amp;#39;good neighbour&amp;#39; through the Link 6 organisation and helping out at the Prospect Hospice or in&amp;nbsp;charity shops.&amp;nbsp; There is no need to be bored in retirement!

We are a friendly group with members from all over the area and generally meet on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall.&amp;nbsp; However, in April we will be going to Westlecott bowls club to play indoor bowls.&amp;nbsp; If you would like more information, please contact Kate on 01793 731536.&amp;nbsp; We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

    <description>

This month&#39;s speaker was Lynda Warren from Purton.&amp;nbsp; She gave us an interesting talk about life in Purton and Royal Wootton Bassett during the Second World War.&amp;nbsp; She particularly talked about evacuation and rationing.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Her father and grandmother shared their house with an evacuee from London and she drew her anecdotes from their experiences.&amp;nbsp; She also gave examples of some very strange recipes suggested for making meals with the limited food available at the time.

Our next meeting is on November 18th in the Village Hall. It is just a general meeting that will give members the opportunity to share interesting books, films or outings they have recently experienced.&amp;nbsp; They will also be working on the scrapbook that members are compiling for the 100 years anniversary of the WI.&amp;nbsp; It is going to be a snap shot of the life of the WI in Broad Town in 2015.&amp;nbsp; One was produced 50 years ago by the Wootton Bassett WI and can be seen in the Museum in Royal Wootton Bassett.&amp;nbsp; We decided to copy their idea!

We are a friendly group and welcome new members.&amp;nbsp; Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall.&amp;nbsp; If you are interested in visiting us, please contact Kate on 01793 731536 or Michelle on 01793 731357.&amp;nbsp; We are also on the Broad Town village website and on Facebook.

    <description>This month we had our annual summer outing. Eighteen of us went to Kelmscott Manor, near Lechlade, the country home of William Morris.&amp;nbsp; We had a lovely day starting with a walk round the garden and lunch. We then ambled round the village to see the Village Hall built by his daughter and the Church where he is buried.&amp;nbsp; Then followed a talk about him, his family and friends; ending with a tour of the house.&amp;nbsp; These were really interesting and informative.&amp;nbsp; We finished the afternoon with tea and biscuits in the garden. Wonderful!
Our September meeting is the &#39;Living Rainforest&#39;&amp;nbsp; a talk by Georgie Jefferies about her work at the Rainforest Centre near Newbury and with the Zoo Lab animals.&amp;nbsp; She will be bringing some of the animals with her!

We are a friendly group and welcome new members.&amp;nbsp; Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall.&amp;nbsp; If you are interested in joining us please contact Kate on 01793 731536 or Michelle on 01783 731357.&amp;nbsp; We are also on the Broad Town village website and on Facebook .</description>

This month we had a very entertaining talk by Georgie Jefferies.&amp;nbsp; She has spent time working at the Living Rainforest near Newbury and described the wonderful plants and animals that they have at their greenhouses there.&amp;nbsp; She also showed us lovely photos of the birds, butterflies and even a sloth that live in their forest. The second part of her talk involved her work with Zoo Lab. This organisation provides animal handling workshops for schools etc.&amp;nbsp; She brought with her several exciting creatures for us to see and touch if we wished.&amp;nbsp; There was a tarantula, a scorpion, a corn snake and a cockroach!

Our speaker for November was unable to attend so we improvised with an evening of &amp;lsquo;show and tell&amp;rsquo;. We had an enjoyable time recommending good books, theatre trips (including ballet, opera, musicals and plays) and enjoyable hotels and holidays. One of our members told us about her three week trip to Rio for the world cup. Another told of her 60th year spent doing 60 amazing things which will reach its highlight in the summer with a parachute jump!
Our December meeting will be on Wednesday 10th when we will be making Christmas wreaths, tree decorations and enjoying some Christmas refreshments.
We are a friendly group and welcome new members. Our programme for next year is just about to be printed, so if you would like to join us and would like some more information please contact Jane on 01793 731105.

At our October meeting, our members, friends and even some husbands attempted a little &amp;lsquo;Line Dancing&amp;rsquo;. We were suitably dressed in checked shirts, jeans, cowboy boots and even a few Stetsons. With the help of our caller we attempted chasses, triple steps and right and left grapevines to name just a few. It was great fun and I think we did better than any of us expected. We finished the evening with a hotdog and some cider.
There is a change to the programme for November, due to our speaker being unavailable, so we will &amp;lsquo;Share and Tell&amp;rsquo; with members recommending books they have enjoyed, interesting places they have visited, recommended films, theatre trips, restaurants etc.
New members are always welcome so if you are interested phone Jane on 731105 for more information.

This summer our WI has been out and about thanks to the good weather. We have had a taster golf session, a walk to a pub for a meal, a visit to Toomers garden centre and a visit to Highclere Castle. We also supported the village Big Gig, serving tea, coffee and a wide variety of cakes. Money raised will be split between the Air Ambulance and WI funds.
Our September meeting was held back in Broad Town Village Hall. After a discussion about our proposed programme for next year, two of our members presented slide shows of their recent holidays. One member told us about a trip to a remote village in West Bengal, India, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of a hospital by her husband&amp;rsquo;s uncle and aunt. She was surprised by the wonderful welcome they received, with the whole village involved in the celebrations. She was amazed by the happiness of the villagers despite their material poverty.
The other described her family holiday to the very north of Sweden to see the Northern lights. She showed some amazing photos of the bright green, curtain-like, light show that they witnessed. They also went snow-shoe trekking, dog sledding and experienced an overnight stay at an ice hotel. The hotel is built afresh every winter and is left to melt in the summer. It is built of snow and huge blocks of ice cut from the river. Each room is different and decorated with huge ice sculptures.
October&amp;rsquo;s meeting will be an evening of line dancing with a cowboy supper and will be held on Wednesday 15th October at 7.30pm at the village hall. New members are always welcome. For more information contact Jane on 731105.

In August we had our summer outing and this year we went to Highclere Castle. Twenty one WI members and four guests from Broad Hinton&amp;rsquo;s &amp;lsquo;Ridgeway Ladies&amp;rsquo; travelled&amp;nbsp; by coach to&amp;nbsp; Highclere in Hampshire, famous now for being the setting for the filming of Downton Abbey.

We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed exploring the house and gardens. We had an excellent lunch and many of us managed to fit in an ice cream and/or cream tea! There was a lot of chat sitting in beautiful surroundings in the sunshine, a really enjoyable day.

Our next meeting will be at 7.30pm on 17th September and we will be back in Broad Town Village hall. It is a members evening when we will be reviewing good books, lovely places to visit, good places to eat etc. New members are always welcome. Call Jane on 01793 731105 for more information.

Our July meeting was held at the White Horse Pub at Winterbourne Bassett.&amp;nbsp; We took advantage of the lovely warm evening by walking from Broad Hinton Church, across the fields to Winterbourne Bassett where we were met by some non-walkers. There were twenty one of us in all. We chatted over a few drinks and most of us enjoyed a meal. We then made the return journey across the fields as the light was fading and the sky was tinged red with the setting sun.
In August we have our summer outing to Highclere House (better known as Downton Abbey).
In September we will be back in Broad Town Village hall at 7.30pm, with a members meeting when we will be sharing good books we have read, nice places to eat, recommended places to holiday, interesting places to go for a day out etc.

On a beautiful June evening, nineteen members of Broad Town WI spent a very enjoyable couple of hours at the Wiltshire Golf and country Club. The club professional, Mark, helped us to improve our putting skills and gave us lots of helpful hints and tips and they worked. We finished the session with a putting competition between two teams. After a tour of the facilities we adjourned to the bar for a refreshing drink and meeting.
On Wednesday 16th July we will be walking from Broad Hinton Church car park to the White Horse Pub at Winterbourne Bassett. New members are always welcome. For more information contact Jane (01793 731105)

May&amp;rsquo;s meeting was held at Toomers Garden Centre near Lydiard Millicent. Nigel demonstrated how to make moss hanging basket filled with trailing begonias, lobelia, pelargoniums, geraniums, fuchsias, surfinas, verbena and marigolds. It was amazing how many plants fitted into a 14&amp;rsquo;&amp;rsquo; basket. The finished basket was raffled and &amp;pound;40 raised for a Meningitis charity. We then had tea and some delicious and very generous pieces of cake and a chance to buy some plants some of which were really unusual.
Next month we are hoping to have a golf taster session.
If you would be interested in joining the WI we meet on the third Wednesday of the month at Broad Town village hall. For more information please phone Jane on 01793 731105.

At this meeting members and one visitor divided into teams for a musical quiz devised by Richard and Beatrice Brazier. The challenges from a number of written clues together with short bursts of music caused much discussion. The music ranged from the 1950&amp;rsquo;s through to the 1980s including past TV series themes and classic films. It created an interesting and enjoyable evening.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;
Our next meeting is May 21st which is a visit to Toomers garden centre for a practical demonstration on hanging baskets. Please note the early time and meet in Toomers car park at 6.50pm for a prompt 7pm start .
New members welcome to our meetings, contact Rosie Law tel. 731472 for details.

Our speaker in February was Dr Simon Manchip and his talk was entitled &amp;lsquo;Dementia- Hopes and Fears&amp;rsquo;. His talk was very informative and surprisingly optimistic considering the subject. Dr Manchip described the symptoms of dementia, short term memory problems, loss of recognition, deterioration of speech, apathy and loss of appetite due to loss of sense of smell. Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, irregular heart rhythm (Atrial fibrillation), high cholesterol and Diabetes Mellitus.
It is possible to reduce risk of Dementia by 40% if all of the possible risks factors are reduced. Protective factors include: regular daily exercise, a small amount of alcohol daily (1-2 units alcohol/day for women, 2-3 units for men) and a Mediterranean diet, which includes mostly fresh vegetables, fruit and fish and is low in animal fat such as red and processed meat, cheese and other dairy products. Early recognition allows patients to put financial affairs in order, make a will, arrange power of attorney, and make lifestyle choices. The government is working towards more rapid diagnosis and more community support.
The Meeting was attended by 2 local counsellors aiming to make Wiltshire &amp;ldquo;Dementia Friendly&amp;rdquo; along with Wiltshire County Council who are &amp;ldquo;Dementia Aware&amp;rdquo;. Wootton Bassett has been chosen as a pilot site. A memory caf&amp;eacute; runs monthly for people with Dementia. Opportunities exist for locals to become involved in their campaign and a tool kit information pack and &amp;ldquo;forget me not badge&amp;rdquo; are available. There is also a research trial at Kingshill, Victoria Centre underway with opportunities for patients and families to take part.
Our March meeting was our AGM followed by a game of skittles.
In April we are having a music quiz, from classical to pop and TV and film theme tunes etc. If you would like to join us, come along to Broad Town Village Hall, on Wednesday 16th April at 7.30pm.

Hopes and Fears Dementia Information - Dr Simon Manchip &amp;ndash; Psycho-geriatrician, Swindon
&amp;nbsp;

    Dementia is a description of symptoms, rather than a diagnosis and usually has mixed and multiple causes. These include: Alzheimer&amp;rsquo;s; a disease due to abnormal proteins being produced in the brain, Vascular Dementia due to narrowing of small blood vessels in the brain, and long standing Parkinson&amp;rsquo;s disease.

    There is no specific diagnostic test available, but the diagnosis can be made from the history and a specifically designed memory test. A head Scan and Blood tests are usually done to exclude other possible diagnoses

    The symptoms of dementia are not just forgetting and short term memory problems, but also includes: loss of recognition of people and objects, speech quality deteriorates, apathy, loss of sense of smell, loss of ability to link information and personality traits become more exaggerated.

    It is increasingly common with age: by 90yrs old 1in 3 people will have dementia. This also means 2/3 people will be unaffected. The incidence is going down as risk factors are being more often recognised and managed earlier.

    Risk factors for Dementia include: smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, irregular heart rhythm (Atrial fibrillation), high cholesterol, Diabetes Mellitus. It is possible to reduce risk of Dementia by 40% if all of the possible risks factors are reduced.

    Protective factors include: regular daily exercise strenuous enough to make you mildly short of breath and put up your heart rate, a small amount of alcohol daily ; 1-2 units alcohol/day for women, 2-3 units for men. (1unit = 1 small glass of wine or &amp;frac12; pt normal strength beer) and a Mediterranean diet, which includes mostly fresh vegetables, fruit and fish and is low in animal fat such as red and processed meat, cheese and other dairy products.

    Best practice management includes early recognition, daily exercise, use of drugs like Aricept, which will help to stabilise the disease for 2yrs aprox. Early recognition allows patients to put financial affairs in order, make a will, arrange power of attorney, make lifestyle choices, and for the general public to understand the disease better. The government is working towards more rapid diagnosis and more community support.
